When Body Moves City offers a free daily aerobics session to Deptford residents. The session is led by Sikarnt Skoolisariyaporn, an art instructor whose choreography combines classic aerobics dance with the principle of Qi Gong and Shaolin martial arts.

This invented choreography integrates the technique of breath control in martial arts with an aerodynamic principle – transposing internal air from body to external space – which is then manifested and communicated to audiences through a form of popular Western exercise activity – aerobics.

Combining moving image and sound with aerobics exercise, the project draws upon and questions the empathetic relationship between the architecture of body and the architecture of city in which bodies reside.

In a city of fast development such as London, the transformation of the city often leaves the locals behind to catch up with its speed of growth. The change in the city instigates changes in the way of living of the locals, and changes in the relationship between the residents. These issues are explored through the politic of aerobics, in which individual bodies collectively move together, following the rhythm of the music. Aerobics creates a heterotopic space between individual and collective, togetherness and isolation – while moving together collectively, participants are also isolated from each other, connected only through the rhythm of music that conducts their movements and thus sync them together.

The project is looking for a point of reconciliation of these out-of-sync relationships, between the resident and the city, and between people and people. Through invented choreography, it also attempts to create an imaginary aerodynamic force between the movement of collective bodies and movement of growth of the city – where a fictional shift point, in which the reverse relationship between the two, is triggered.

Each session will start with a short warm up and basic introduction to the postures. New techniques and postures will be introduced each day. All sessions are free of charge and participants are encouraged to participate in more than one session. prior experience of aerobics is not required. please wear comfortable shoes.

There are 10 places available for each session.
